What’s Your Motivation?

What is your primary motivation for "rest"?

Do you approach rest from a mindset of recovery - or one of preparation?

I realize there likely isn't a black-and-white answer to this question - there is at least a sprinkle of both in our motivations, and they each definitely have their place.

But how about it? Which is your primary go-to?

"I am about to end a significant season of production, and I can't wait until I get to put some sand between my toes!"

OR...

"We have got a serious production season coming up in Q2. Let's be sure to plan a week away in late Q1 before we dive into the deep end."

If I were to guess, the majority would align with Scenario A. Personally, I am seeking to lean more heavily into Scenario B.

Simple case in point: The writing of this post.

The post idea came to me last night. I taught on the subject of Rest earlier that morning, and the pattern of "life flowing out of rest" (as opposed to the other way around) was continuing to stir within me.

Ideas were popping. The old me would have pulled out my computer and started the writing process. However...

This is the new(er) me. It's my day off. It's my weekly rest rhythm. It is not time to work. It is time to prepare my heart, mind, soul, and body for the work that is ahead of me in the coming week.

To jump back into work prematurely could jeopardize my performance later in the week. And if not this week, maybe the next. Or the next.

Point being that rest - and its converse, the lack thereof - has a cumulative effect. The consequences of our decisions - be they good or bad - will likely build over time.

In order to be consistent with my philosophy, I chose to wait, to not dive back into work prematurely.

The result? Quite frankly, I was chomping at the bit this morning. Though it may sound legalistic to you, I was pretty excited when the clock struck 10:30a!

It is a great feeling to be able to say that I look forward to the launch of the work week.

Yes, I love what I do. That's definitely part of it.

But there is no denying the increased energy, zeal, and attention I am able to bring to the table that is a direct result of the position of rest that precedes it.

In the early stages of a quest in this direction, I suggest finding pockets of rest wherever and whenever you can find them.

But as one moves forward intentionally, I highly recommend prioritizing rest on the front end.

Life just seems to work better when it flows out of overflow and abundance rather than scarcity and survival.

Blessings to you all, my friends!
